How to check a listing is actually live
Approved, scheduled and confirmed are all claims. The only proof is the public page rendering your product name to somebody with no cookies.
This is the check the rest of the industry skips, and it is the only one that distinguishes a listing from a receipt.
- Open a private window
No cookies, no extensions, not signed in to anything. An incognito window is enough; a different browser is better.
- Load the public listing URL
Not the dashboard, not the preview, not the confirmation email's landing page. The URL a stranger would reach.
- Find your product name in the rendered page
Use find-on-page. If the name is not there, whatever the page says, you are not listed. Some directories publish a category page but never the entry.
- Check the link points at you
Your domain, not a tracker. See dofollow vs nofollow.
- Record the date you checked
So the next check has something to compare against.
What does not count as liveA dashboard status of approved, a scheduled publication date, a confirmation email, an editor replying that it looks good, or your listing appearing in a logged-in preview. All five are routinely followed by nothing.
Why a logged-in check does not count
Directories routinely show the submitter a rendered preview of a listing that is still in a queue, was rejected, or was published and later pulled. Your session sees the record; a stranger sees the page. Only the second one is a listing.
Re-check later, not just once
Listings disappear. Sites get redesigned, categories get merged, free tiers get retired and whole directories go dark — we watch submission pages start returning 404 every week. A listing verified once is a listing verified once.
